Infinity Ward Working On New Project

Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward has discussed its future and upcoming projects, as well as the possibility of a new non-Call of Duty IP.

Speaking on its official website blog, the company said it has decided to “reup” its contract with Activision, which has had significant impact on its next project.

“The biggest question I’m probably asked the most on any given day is, ‘What are you guys working on now?!’; Especially since it’s been nearly 9 months after we’ve shipped (the currently #1 most played game on Xbox Live) Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare,” the blog reads.

“While I can’t quite say what it is, that we’re currently working on it, I did want to give you a status report on exactly what’s happening here at Infinity Ward and where we’re going as a studio.

“We’re excited to announce that in the recent months we have decided to reup on our contract with Activision publishing. The recently renegotiated deal may not seem like much of an impact from the outside perspective, but it has laid the ground work and kick started our future project, as well as the possibility of a unique new IP by Infinity Ward, that we’ll have complete control over.

“We’re excited to be working on our next project, but it’s going to be quite a while before I can share any details on exactly what that project is.”

The company didn’t discuss the details of its contract “reup” with Activison (the publisher already owns the studio since 2003), but rumours are already swirling around cyberspace.

According to sources speaking to CVG cousin Next-Gen.biz, the updated contract is in order to guarantee Infinity Ward is the sole developer of the CoD franchise after World at War later this year. Unlucky, Treyarch.

As for the talk of new IP, there’s already plenty of chatter that the developer may be exploring the sci-fi genre - either in an even more modern CoD or a new franchise altogether. This could go very, very well, or horribly, dream-crushingly wrong.
