It wasn’t long ago that Killzone 2 was a video game punch line, the sort of thing you talked about when referencing a game that could never live up to the hype. The first title in the series failed to be the “Halo killer” many believed it could become, and an ambitious “visual target” trailer shown at E3 a couple years back nearly doomed the project from the start, when it couldn’t replicate the same details in-game. All of that is about to change though, as Guerrilla Games has Killzone 2 primed and ready to fight, and the joke will soon be on all those who dismissed this title too soon.

Some games, like Gears of War 2 were naturally expected to leave a big impression, but this year saw its share of unforeseen knockout punches with high-concept surprises like Flower, or the every-bit-as-good-as-promised showing made by Little Big Planet, which took Best of Show, and surprises like FF XIII announce on Xbox360.

The latest rumour in Quatermann’s section of EGM this month, speculates that Rockstar’s first upcoming DLC pack for GTA IV (exclusive to the Xbox 360 platform) will introduce an unknown, mysterious biker character. Not much else is known at all, but apparently, you can also expect more new characters to be revealed in DLC episode 2 as well.

Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward has discussed its future and upcoming projects, as well as the possibility of a new non-Call of Duty IP.

Speaking on its official website blog, the company said it has decided to “reup” its contract with Activision, which has had significant impact on its next project.

“The biggest question I’m probably asked the most on any given day is, ‘What are you guys working on now?!’; Especially since it’s been nearly 9 months after we’ve shipped (the currently #1 most played game on Xbox Live) Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare,” the blog reads.

“While I can’t quite say what it is, that we’re currently working on it, I did want to give you a status report on exactly what’s happening here at Infinity Ward and where we’re going as a studio.

“We’re excited to announce that in the recent months we have decided to reup on our contract with Activision publishing. The recently renegotiated deal may not seem like much of an impact from the outside perspective, but it has laid the ground work and kick started our future project, as well as the possibility of a unique new IP by Infinity Ward, that we’ll have complete control over.

“We’re excited to be working on our next project, but it’s going to be quite a while before I can share any details on exactly what that project is.”

The company didn’t discuss the details of its contract “reup” with Activison (the publisher already owns the studio since 2003), but rumours are already swirling around cyberspace.

According to sources speaking to CVG cousin Next-Gen.biz, the updated contract is in order to guarantee Infinity Ward is the sole developer of the CoD franchise after World at War later this year. Unlucky, Treyarch.

As for the talk of new IP, there’s already plenty of chatter that the developer may be exploring the sci-fi genre - either in an even more modern CoD or a new franchise altogether. This could go very, very well, or horribly, dream-crushingly wrong.

Diablo 3 Says Bye Bye to PK’ing

Blizzard poster Bashiok writes on the World of Warcraft forums that the ability to kill other players without their consent (also known as PK’ing) is not going to be a part of Diablo 3’s gameplay as it was in the previous two iterations of the series.

While the removal of PKing may be disappointing to some, it’s good to know that they’re actually planning to implement a full fledged PvP system to replace the old murder sprees.

Hope it will be just like in WoW

LittleBigPlanet - Some New Info

In an now-finished live interview with Eurogamer, Media Molecule boss David Smith’s confirmed that VOIP will be included in the upcoming PS3 “blue sky” game.

“I can tell you we have VOIP,” he said. “It’s really useful when you’re making a level with a friend who happens to be in a different country. It fits really nicely into the game. There’s some more cool stuff about this that I’m not going to go into right now. We are using the camera for some of the creative features of the game. It’s a pretty powerful way of getting new content into the LBP world.”

Also, game comes in 720p @ 30fps, and will need about 1GB to install on HDD.
