Scott Steinberg, Vice President of Product Marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), has said that he expects Insomniacs forthcoming Resistance 2 to go “toe-to-toe against Gears of War 2 when both games launch later this year.

Speaking to Gamesindustry.biz, Steinberg commented, I think one of the biggest games for us will be Resistance 2. We expect that, in November, to go toe-to-toe against Gears of War 2.

“It will be our third-generation PS3 product. Insomniac, having shipped Resistance 1, quietly sold a million units. And then Ratchet & Clank last fall. This is the third on their technology shipping in November.”

He also offered insight into Sonys relatively low profile at the Game Developers Conference last week, adding, It just felt stronger coming from so many different high-calibre partners as opposed to self-congratulatory announcements from ourselves that the war is over and the standards battle is complete, and we have a standard and it is us.

“It just felt like a keynote would be a little bit over the top, he said.

Motorstorm 2 This Christmas?

A reporter for the BBC attending the Game Developers Conference last week has revealed some interesting tidbits on a number of upcoming projects for Sonys PlayStation 3 console.

Among the more notable elements of his report include details on Evolution Studios forthcoming racing sequel, MotorStorm 2, which he claims is scheduled to hit shops in time for the 2008 Christmas holiday season.

The high-speed off-road romp will take players across a variety of new environments, including those set on tropical islands full of interactive vegetation. A four-player split screen mode has also been confirmed.

However, perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the report comes in the form of a nameless title due for release on PS3 in 2009; though sworn to secrecy under a Non Disclosure Act, the blogger notes that the mysterious title looked so impressive, he feels that Sony could be on the verge of making the next step in what games consoles are capable of in terms of story-telling and immersion.

Those of you who feel obliged to speculate as to the identity of this title should feel free to do so in our comment section below.

Darren Waters of the BBC was treated to a special look at a game due out for the PS3 in 2009 but he has been sworn to secrecy. Sony wanted to give him a glimpse of what the console will be capable of and he saw a trailer for this new title which is due out in 2009. Waters claims that the footage he was shown was in-game according to PR reps and that it left him absolutely speechless and is set to shake up what consoles are capable of.

So what else was I shown? Well, I was shown a trailer for a game not due out till 2009 but was sworn to absolute secrecy. Apparently, Sony just wanted to give a glimpse of what the console will be capable of.

In fact, the game is such a secret that when I mentioned the game to Phil Harrison last week he was unsure at first whether even to admit the title existed. When I explained I had been shown it under strict Non Disclosure Agreement terms he looked relieved.

I don’t mean to be a tease - all I can say is that I was left speechless. If the footage I was shown truly is “in game”, as told to me by the Sony PR people, then we could be on the brink of a step change in what games consoles are capable of in terms of story-telling and immersion.

And there I’ll leave it. Feel free to speculate on what I was shown. I cannot, of course, confirm or deny what it was….

The past 15 years at Sony Computer Entertainment has been the defining journey of my life so far, said Harrison. I am grateful to all the PlayStation family for their incredible support, guidance and friendship. It has been a privilege to serve as part of the team and be inspired by them on a daily basis. I am so proud of everything PlayStation has achieved and will continue to support its future in every way I can.
